Position Overview
We are seeking a highly technical and hands-on Junior Controller to independently manage the full accounting and financial reporting function for a ~$20MM operating entity within the transportation and farming sectors. This role requires deep proficiency in QuickBooks Advanced, strong command of U.S. GAAP, and the ability to oversee complex cost structures, asset-intensive operations, and multi-entity financial activity with minimal oversight.
The ideal candidate will possess both technical accounting depth and operational awareness, with experience supporting capital-heavy businesses involving equipment, inventory, fuel, payroll-intensive labor, and regulatory reporting.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Close
Own and execute the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process in accordance with U.S. GAAP
Prepare complete and accurate financial statements including:
Balance Sheet
Income Statement (P&L)
Statement of Cash Flows
Perform account reconciliations for all balance sheet accounts including:
Cash and restricted cash
Accounts receivable and allowance for doubtful accounts
Inventory and work-in-process (WIP)
Accrued liabilities
Prepaid expenses
Fixed assets and accumulated depreciation
Debt and loan balances
Identify, document, and book adjusting journal entries and accruals
Maintain a clean and auditable general ledger
Technical Accounting & Compliance
Apply and interpret U.S. GAAP related to:
Revenue recognition (ASC 606, where applicable)
Inventory capitalization and valuation
Fixed asset accounting and depreciation (MACRS/straight-line)
Deferred expenses and prepaid amortization
Maintain compliance with tax-related accounting requirements in coordination with external CPAs
Support annual tax filings, including entity-level reporting and fixed asset schedules
Prepare schedules for outside auditors, lenders, and tax advisors
Ensure proper internal controls, documentation, and segregation of duties within a lean environment
Industry-Specific Accounting (Transportation & Agriculture)
Track and allocate equipment costs, fuel, maintenance, and repairs
Manage fleet and heavy equipment accounting, including capitalization, impairment assessment, and depreciation
Support job costing, route costing, and margin analysis where applicable
Handle inventory accounting related to farming operations (supplies, feed, seed, materials)
Support cost-of-goods-sold (COGS) calculations and operational gross margin analysis
Understand labor-heavy payroll environments including overtime, seasonal labor, and regulatory requirements
Cash Flow & Working Capital Management
Monitor and forecast cash flow
Manage accounts receivable collections and aging
Oversee accounts payable, vendor compliance, and payment cycles
Assist with working capital optimization, including inventory turns and receivables management
Systems & QuickBooks (Advanced)
Serve as the primary owner and administrator of QuickBooks Advanced
Maintain chart of accounts, classes, locations, and job costing structures
Ensure system integrity, accuracy, and scalability
Support integrations (payroll systems, banking feeds, reporting tools)
Create and maintain custom financial and management reports
Leadership & Communication
Act as the primary accounting point of contact for ownership and senior leadership
Translate financial data into clear, actionable insights
Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning initiatives
Provide guidance and oversight to clerical accounting support as needed
Qualifications & Experience
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
5+ years of advanced QuickBooks experience (required)
5+ years of progressive accounting experience in:
Transportation, agriculture, manufacturing, or asset-intensive industries
